About ERA
Earned Run Average (ERA) is a statistic in baseball that measures the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings pitched.
ERA = (Earned Runs × 9) ÷ Innings Pitched
An earned run is any run that scores against a pitcher without the benefit of an error or a passed ball.
Example: If a pitcher allows 15 earned runs in 45 innings pitched, their ERA would be (15 × 9) ÷ 45 = 3.00
In general:
- ERA below 2.00: Elite / Cy Young caliber
- ERA 2.00-3.00: Excellent / All-Star level
- ERA 3.00-4.00: Very good / Solid starter
- ERA 4.00-5.00: Average / Serviceable pitcher
- ERA above 5.00: Below average / Needs improvement
